Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville were in agreement that it was harsh for Ryan Gravenberch to be sent off for two yellow card offences. During the second half of Liverpool's Premier League clash against Manchester City, he was penalised with two cautions for a late tackle on Elliot Anderson and pull-back on Jeremy Doku
However, Carragher and Neville were both not convinced that he should have been dismissed. The former said on Sky Sports: "It feels really harsh when you think of the two challenges. The first challenge was not a card and the referee was far too quick to get the card out."
"The first was the same, the referee was so quick to get a yellow out. Neville then added: "That is very, very soft." Gravenberch was quite clearly upset as he trudged off the pitch with Andoni Iraola swiftly readying Trey Nyoni to come in and fill the midfield void.
Before he could actually be introduced, though, Erling Haaland put City into the lead within three minutes of the red card. Doku then fired in a superb second for the visitors with the Belgian ultimately changing the game in his side's favour after replacing Iliman Ndiaye in the 56th minute.
Prior to Gravenberch's dismissal, he was one of many that forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into a strong save with Lewis Koumas and Alexis Mac Allister also going close.
Two goals down and at a man disadvantage, the game looked to have been decided in just six minutes but City later made absolute sure of the points.
In a move where every City star touched the ball, which included a clever flick from Josko Gvardiol and Rayan Cherki sitting down Jeremie Frimpong prior, the latter swept in a third under Alisson.
On the goal, Carragher said: "Well we can talk about Manchester City, players that they've brought in, the money that they've spent, when they have spent money, whether its legal or not, they've bought good players. He [Cherki] is one of them.
"Absolute quality since he come into the squad, what a goal that is. The less said about Frimpong the better, he is all over the place, wow."
The victory maintains City's winning start to the season but any points from now are under a cloud following their guilty verdict for 114 financial charges, as pointed out by Neville.
He said: "That's the problem for the league this season, Manchester City are an outstanding team but if they don't overturn this guilty verdict, these points will be taken off them. This is the cloud that hangs over the entirety of the game."
City continue to protest their innocence and have appealed against the outcome reached by the independent panel.
