England star Djed Spence completes Tottenham exit after shining at World Cup

Djed Spence was England's surprise package at the World Cup, producing a string of impressive performances both as a starter and from the bench, but Tottenham have sold him to Inter Milan

Tottenham have confirmed that Djed Spence has completed a permanent move to Inter Milan. Spence, 26, has joined the Italian giants in a deal worth €30million (£26m) weeks after his standout performances for England at the World Cup.

The full-back, who can play on both sides of defence, has signed a five-year contract with Inter and links up with international team-mate John Stones at San Siro. Spence featured in all eight of England's games at the World Cup, helping Thomas Tuchel's side finish third.

It came off the back of a difficult campaign at Tottenham, who he joined from Middlesbrough in 2022 for an initial £12.5m. Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi wanted to keep him at the club but Spence has opted to leave.

The ex-Nottingham Forest star made a total of 59 appearances for Tottenham and helped them win the Europa League in 2025 under Ange Postecoglou, beating Manchester United in the final in Bilbao. Spence's departure comes after first-choice right-back Pedro Porro signed a new deal in June, while left-back Andy Robertson has arrived from Liverpool.

In a farewell message to their supporters, the 26-year-old wrote: "A special chapter comes to an end, It's been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I'll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao.

"Thanks to all the staff members who've helped me along the way, the players who've become family and most importantly thank you to the fans. Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart."

Spence joined Cristian Romero in leaving Spurs on Saturday. The centre-back, who was club captain, joined Atletico Madrid for £34m.

De Zerbi is yet to name his replacement ahead of Tottenham's first game of the season next Saturday. Spurs travel to Brentford for a 5:30pm kick-off.

Having failed to qualify for Europe, Tottenham will host Charlton in the second round of the Carabao Cup the following Wednesday. Their first home game is a clash with Newcastle.
